This game is called “The key to freedom!” and it is built off of the Unity 2D game kit.
Setting: The setting for this level is an old Aztec temple that is long forgotten but still holds rumors of a special relic that can grant great power deep inside. However, this temple is trapped with dangerous acid, monsters, spikes, and difficult platforms to defend the treasure. Light is your only source of sanity, but how far will your mentality go? The only way to find out if the treasure is inside is to delve deep into the heart of this temple, but remember, it is only rumors after all.
Design Goal: The design goal behind this level is to really make it feel like you are trapped deep inside a temple with various challenges that hinder the player. It starts off with a small tutorial when you enter the temple and progressively introduces you to mechanics until it ramps up towards the end. The main mechanic of this level is to traverse through the many locked doors shooting switches and pushing blocks onto buttons. This is coupled with the moving platforms in close and far encounters to not make it sound as easy as it looks. The enemies and platforms will add a challenge on top of the spikes and acid that plague the level, and I wanted to test the player in their puzzle solving skills that get more difficult as the level goes on. The placement of health packs and monsters feel abundant, but not over-bearing (unless needed) and is an attempt to keep the flow of the level feeling smooth.
Here is the very first papermap sketch drawing of the first iteration of this level.
Using the Unity 2D game kit, this was a preproduction level used to test out the specific mechanics in my level, such as enemy attack ranges, shoot-able buttons, and platform speed and size!
